Karl Theodor, Duke in Bavaria

Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria ( born August 9, 1839 in Possenhofen, † November 30, 1909 in Kreuth ) was a famous German ophthalmologist and the father of the Belgian King Albert I and the Bavarian Crown Prince Rupprecht.

Life

Carl Theodor was a son of Duke Maximilian in Bavaria and the Bavarian king's daughter Ludovica. His sister Elizabeth was married to the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I, the other sister Marie with the King Francis II of the Two Sicilies, the youngest Sophie with the French Duke Ferdinand of Alencon.

At 14, he joined the Bavarian Army and eventually became general of cavalry. He took 1870/71 in part on the staff of the Saxon duke at the Franco-German War. After retiring from active service, he decided to study at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University, first in the fields of philosophy, law and economics, and finally in medicine, which he in 1880 by the state exam and subsequent doctorate med completed. . Then attending, with Professor Arlt in Vienna and with Professor Horner in Zurich. For fifteen years he practiced alternately in Munich, and at the Tegernsee in Merano.

In 1875 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In 1895, he earned with his second wife, Marie José land in Nymphenburgerstraße and founded the private eye clinic Duke Carl Theodor in Munich, which today is one of the most prestigious in Bavaria. In the first fourteen years of the clinic, he led more than 5,000 cataract operations and advised and treated other eye disorders.

Duke Carl Theodor was buried in the family crypt in Schloss Tegernsee. His widow transferred the clinic in 1917 in an Foundation, the medical director was the former assistant to Duke Carl Theodor Heinrich Zenker ( until 1943 ), then his son Carl Zenker (up to 1978).

Family

In his first marriage Duke Carl Theodor was with his cousin ( first degree) Princess Sophie of Saxony ( 1845-1867 ), daughter of King John I of Saxony, married. The marriage produced a daughter emerged:

His second wife he married in 1874 the Infanta Marie José of Portugal ( 1857-1943 ), daughter of King Michael I of Portugal. From their marriage five children were born:
