Karl von Lützow

Karl von Lützow ( born December 23, 1832 in Göttingen, † April 22, 1897 in Vienna ) was a German art historian and professor.

Life and work

Karl von Lützow, son of a chamberlain and Mecklenburg Castle captain Carl von Lützow (1794-1868) in Schwerin, grew up in Schwerin, where he attended high school. He was thus one of the Mecklenburg branch Goldenbow and wholesale Salitz his family and not to their böhm - österr. Part of his family, although he spent much of his life in Vienna. In the winter semester 1851/52 he matriculated at Göttingen and began to study classical philology and archeology. He joined the fraternity Hannovera.

For the summer semester 1854 he moved to the University of Munich. There he made the acquaintance of Friedrich Bodenstedtstraße and other poets, some of whom were invited to the Round Table of the Bavarian King Maximilian II. He was with his friend Karl Lemcke of the founders of the Munich poetry circle " Crocodiles " and was given the nickname "Beaver ". This artist covenant was under the influence of Emanuel Geibel.

After his PhD ( De vasis fictilibus more archaico PICTIS ) Dr. phil. In 1856 he went to Berlin to study the local archaeological collections. Here he also met Wilhelm Lübke know and accompanied him on a study trip to Italy. Further journeys led him to France and England, with the result that his interest is more in art history turned. In 1858 he qualified as a professor in Munich with a thesis on the history of the ornament on the painted Greek pottery and then became private. 1863 Karl von Lützow went to Vienna, where he was first a lecturer at the university. The following year he became a lecturer in art history at the Academy of Fine Arts. In addition, the management of the library and the collection of engravings he was appointed; after, he was appointed to the Board of the Academy. In 1867 he was appointed extraordinary and 1882 as full professor of art history at the Technical University of Vienna.

His bond of friendship to the publisher Ernst Arthur Seemann in Leipzig meant that he agreed to in 1863 renowned German art journals to take up to his death, the publication of the only magazine of Fine Arts in Supplement Kunstchronik. Other works by him are published by EA Seemann. Karl von Lützow, who has written a number of art -historical essays, lectured and published also like about the present events as well as current developments in architecture. Of particular interest is still his opinion on the Reichstag building in Berlin. He held the dome for tasteless, the towers are too heavy, criticized the lack of architectural structure and through education and criticized the figure sculptures. The allegation that it was an " accident Creation" does not originate with him, but received criticism for its new impetus.

Since the well-known art historian in the Austrian capital had become home, honored him the city of Vienna by the Honorable grave No. 9 received 14 A in the group at the Central Cemetery.
