Kawambwa

Kawambwa is a town with 20,000 inhabitants in the province of Luapula in Zambia. It is located 1,300 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administrative district of the same name with 102 503 inhabitants ( 2000 census ).

Economy

Kawambwa is above the fertile marshes and meadows of the Luapula shortly before its confluence with the Lake Mweru. The region around Kawambwa is agrarian. 2006 was a slogan: "Free from poverty by 2030 ". Development goal is that smallholders produce less corn and cassava, but more pepper and a vegetables, soy and mushrooms, and consequently agricultural products, which fetch higher prices in the market. The supply of seeds and fertilizers is due to administrative and logistical problems remains difficult; many small farmers the investment risk seems too high, especially since they would be the recipients for typically a loan at high interest rates.

Social

In the vicinity there are tea plantations, which were privatized in 2001, they are now run by an Indian consortium. The Times of Zambia complained September 2006 " slave-like working conditions " at the Kawambwa Tea Company.

Infrastructure

Kawamba has primary and secondary schools with boarding facilities, a 1,500 -meter-long airstrip of gravel and a medical center.

Tourism

Nine kilometers away from the road of Kawambwa after Mporokoso situated by the River Kalungwishi the Lumangwe Falls and a little further downstream the multistage Kabweluma cases. The Lumangwe Falls can be reached quite well on a dirt road, where there is a tourist lodge. The river banks are covered with rainforest -like vegetation. The Kabweluma cases are more difficult ( bad road, about 1 km walk away).
