Kayangel

Kayangel ( Ngcheangel ) is the northernmost state of the Pacific island republic of Palau and is located about 72 kilometers north of Melekeok, the capital of Palau.

The Ngaruangel Reef is an emerging atoll about 10 km northwest of the Kayangel Atoll, and separated from it by the Ngaruangl Passage, a very deep and 8 km wide passage. The reef has a unvegetated and small uninhabited island (area 1.5 ha) of the same name, which lies on the eastern Riffkranz. The Ngaruangel Reef is under protection.

The Velasco Reef is a sunken atoll 26 km north of Ngaruangl riffs; However, the largest part of the reef is not mapped.

The Parliament of Palau adopted a joint resolution in January 2005, which supports an agreement between the State Kayangel and the Palau Pacific Energy Inc. ( PPE) in 2002, after which the oil company for a certain period of exclusive rights for exploration, drilling and oil production in the surrounding marine area is given. Originally, the government of Palau had rejected this on the grounds of environmental protection, then bent but a petition from the residents of the state Kayangel of 2003, which spoke out for exploration.
