Kazimieras BÅ«ga

Casimir Buga ( born November 6, 1879 in Pažiegė; † December 2, 1924 in Königsberg ) was a Lithuanian linguist. He is still regarded as the most important Lithuanian linguist.

Life

Buga came from a farming family. In 1898 he enrolled at the insistence of his parents at the seminary in St. Petersburg. This he left, however, and worked as a private tutor, assistant in a weather station. 1900 published his first linguistic items under the pseudonym Selis. The acquaintance with Casimir Jaunius, E. Volter, F. Fortunatow among others led to an adjustment as secretary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 1905 put Buga as External his Abitur and enrolled in the philological faculty of St. Petersburg University, where he studied as a student of Jaunius. 1912 ended Buga study and remains in St. Petersburg in Baudouin de Courtenay, in 1914 followed by a period of study with Adalbert Bezzenberger in Königsberg. 1916 following the appointment as lecturer, associate professor in 1917 - due to the war in Perm. In 1920 he returned to the now independent Lithuania and is a professor at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas newly established. 1924 dies Buga in Königsberg. Buried he is in Kaunas.

Reception

Together with the Latvian Jānis Endzelīns applies Buga as the founder of Baltic studies in the Baltic States, as both possessed both linguistic training as well as through knowledge of the mother tongue explored languages. Buga justified the name of research, both in the reconstruction of personal names from the early days of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as with the study of names of water where he could show that now Slavic settlement area was once inhabited by Balts. He works on dialects and initiated the academic ( 20-volume ) Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language ( completed 2002). His debut release Aistische studies from 1908 is considered serious misconduct under the influence of Jaunius.
