Keban, Elazığ

Keban is a city and capital of the eponymous district in the Turkish province of Elazig. The county Keban lies in the west of the province and borders the provinces of Malatya and Tunceli. The city has Keban 4860, the entire county 6,579 inhabitants (as of 2012). The city lies on the River Euphrates Keban, which is dammed north of the Keban Keban Reservoir.

History

The story Kebans goes back very far. Thus, during the construction of Keban Dam traces of settlement have been found from the Chalcolithic period. At the time of the Hittites in the 2nd millennium BC Keban was part of the country Išuwa. From this period the settlement mounds testify Korucutepe and Norşuntepe with inscriptions and names of the kings of Išuwa. In Tepecik find the remains of Assyrian trading post. After the fall of the Hittites ruled in the 9th century BC, the Urartian.

Later, the Byzantines and after them the Seljuks ruled over Keban. In 1017 the Seljuk ruler Chagri Beg led a campaign to Elazig. After the Turkish conquest of Anatolia were differences of Turkish principalities such as the Ortoqiden, Çubukoğulları, Dulkadir and Aq Qoyunlu. In 1515, the Ottomans defeated the Safavids and were master of the whole of Anatolia. Keban remained Ottoman until the First World War. Since 1923 Keban is part of Turkey.
