In circulation are banknotes of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 shillings. Usual coins are 1, 5, 10, 20, and (rarely ) 40 shillings. The 40 - shilling coin was issued on the occasion of 40 years of independence from Britain in 2003. Older cent denominations are no longer in use, given the low value.
