Kew (Victoria)

Kew is a suburb of the Australian city of Melbourne. It is located 6 km east of the city center and with more than 22,000 inhabitants, is one of the most populous.

History

The history of the neighborhood began with the commissioning of a water mill on the Yarra River in the year 1840. 1851 put the English crown, the region now known as Kew for sale. One of the buyers, Nicholas Fenwick, built roads, subdivided the land and named it after the London Borough of Kew. The new district was soon popular among members of the upper class. It was founded in shops and several churches. Between 1910 and the Second World War, the population of Kew tripled.

From 1921 to 1994 Kew formed its own local government area, after which it was annexed to the City of Boroondara.
