Khalid Al-Maaly

Khalid Al -Maaly (Arabic خالد المعالي Khalid al - Ma ʿ ali, DMG Halid al - Ma ʿ Alī; born April 15, 1956 in al- Samawa, Iraq ) is a German writer.

Life

Khalid Al -Maaly comes from a Bedouin family. In 1978, he passed the matriculation examination; In 1979 he left after coming to power of Saddam Hussein 's Iraqi homeland and fled over Lebanon to France. In 1980, he applied for in the Federal Republic of Germany for political asylum; In 1983 he was recognized as a political refugee; he is a German citizen since 1996. Al -Maaly now lives in Cologne, where he directs the he founded Al- Kamel Verlag and the Arab literary magazine Uyoun out there.

Al -Maaly had already published in the seventies poems in various Arab literary magazines; his first book of poems was published in Arabic in 1978. Nowadays he writes poetry and prose both in German and in Arabic. He is also a translator from English into Arabic and from Arabic into German works.

Khalid Al -Maaly is a member of the Association of German writers. He was, inter alia, the 1988 Rolf -Dieter Brinkmann Scholarship, 1990 Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia and in 1995 a scholarship from the artist village Schöppingen.
