Khalifah bin Said of Zanzibar

Sayyid Khalifa bin Said al - Busaidi, (* 1852, † February 13, 1890; Arab خليفة بن سعيد البوسعيدي, DMG Halifa b Sa ʿ īd al - Busa ʿ Īdī; . Well Khalifa) was the younger brother and successor of Sultan Bargash ibn Said from Zanzibar and son of Sultan Said ibn Sultan of Oman. Khalifa ruled Zanzibar from 26 March 1888 to his death.

From his brother and predecessor Bargash Khalifa was 1870 initially plugged because of ( alleged ) involvement in a coup attempt in jail, his sister Salme reached years later his release.

After Bargash had died suddenly during tough negotiations with the German East Africa Company ( DOAG ), Khalifa was appointed as his successor as the sultan. Opposite the DOAG he was clearly more responsive and signed on April 28, 1888 the so-called coast contract, alleging Zanzibar leased for compensation payments by the Company suzerainty over the East African coastal zone and the customs revenue from their ports. The flag change led to the revolt of the East African coast population.

How Bargash also promoted Khalifa combating slavery and was appointed in 1889 to the Grand Cross of Honour Knight of the British Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.

Chalifas successor was his brother Ali ibn Said, who had, however, already in 1890 to accept the British protectorate rule over Zanzibar.
