Kilgore is a city in Gregg County and Rusk County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

The city is located in northeastern Texas on U.S. Highway 259 and Highways 31, 42 and 135, 105 km from Arkansas to the north is in the east and 77 km from the border with Louisiana, in the northeast away 145 km from Oklahoma and has a total of 40, 0 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The area was indeed inhabited before the American Civil War, the place, however, only founded in 1872, when the International -Great Northern Railroad tracks between their Longview and Palestine moved. Was named the place after Constantine Buckley Kilgore, who donated the land for the railroad in the area available.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 11.301 people in 4,403 households and 2,963 families. The population density was 283.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 78.22 % White, 12.34 % African American, 0.41 % Native American, 0.68 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 6.95 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.38% were of mixed descent, and 11.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,403 households, 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.5 % were married couples living together. 12.6% were single mothers and 32.7 % were non-families. 27.6 % of all households were single-person households, and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size amounted to 3.03.

24.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 12.5 % from 18 to 24, 26.2% 25-44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 91.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,910, and the median income for a family $ 40,737. Males had a median income of $ 31,575 versus $ 20,149 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,314. 13.8 % of the population and 9.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 17.5 % have children under the age of 18 and 10.1 % of those 65 or older.
