The Kim Il-sung University ( Kor. 김일성 종합 대학 ,金日成 综合大学revid. Romanization Gim - Il- seong - Jonghabdaehag ) was opened in Pyongyang on October 1, 1946 and is the first university of North Korea. It is located in the district Taesong - guyŏk in the local district Ryongnam -dong.

The building dates back to a decision of the Workers' Party of Korea in July 1946 and it was named after the " eternal president" Kim Il-sung.

Binding Admission requirements include a recommendation from the secondary school and a member of the party. The approval is conditional on the fulfillment of three main criteria: academic degrees, a life in accordance with the party and society and the status of the applicant. This is defined by party affiliation of the parents of the applicant and by the criterion of whether the family was considered at the time of the party's founding as a " proletarian ".

The politician and later Hwang Jang- yop was a refugee at the University from time to time senior lecturer in philosophy and from April 1965 the President.

Apart from the 12 faculties there are 50 departments and about 600 students classes. The number of students is about 12,000 (in addition there are more than 4000 night and exchange students). It also Asian, African and European applicants are accepted.

Campus

The university campus covers 1,560,000 square meters and includes a scientific library with more than two million books one, plus a sports complex with a three-storey indoor stadium of 1989, museums, a printing company and a hospital. The main building was built in 1948, the four - and nine-storey building with the number 1 in 1965. The boarding school of the University can accommodate 10,000 students.
