Club career

Career start

Vilfort began his career in the youth of Skovlunde IF. In 1981, he signed his first contract for the first team at the then second division club BK Frem Copenhagen. As a striker obliged he was retrained at Frem the attacking midfielder, which had no change in his Torgefahr result. Already in his first season, get him 15 goals this season, before the following season with 25 goals fired the club to the former first division.

In the 1st Division continued its rise rapidly. With 19 goals, he was behind, Vilhelm Munk Nielsen second in the scoring charts and became the Danish national team. With the club he managed sovereign relegation. It was followed by two more seasons with a total of 23 goals, before moving in July 1985 to France to Lille.

OSC Lille

In the former French center stand him went almost completely lost in a row, his goal threat. In the highly defensive oriented team ( only Bernard Bureau could achieve more than six goals ), his offensive strength did not come to bear. Lille managed with this system, although the good tenth table will finish, but Vilfort was dissatisfied and urged a return to Denmark.

After only one year in France, he subsequently wrote in July 1986 at Brøndby IF, where he remained until his career end. Over the years he became the indispensable institution in the middle of the club.

Living legend at Brøndby

Already in the first season, he sat in the European Cup of Champions 1986/87 his first fragrance brand for the club. Brøndby moved thanks to two important goals of Vilfort against BFC Dynamo prior to the quarter- finals, where they only failed because of the eventual winners FC Porto. One was behind Aarhus GF runner-up in the league.

With the commitment of Peter Schmeichel for season 1987 Brøndby then became the ne plus ultra in the Danish league. The squad peppered with players like Schmeichel in goal, the then ligan Star strikers Claus Nielsen and Bent Christensen, young star Brian Laudrup, John Jensen in defensive and Vilfort attacking midfielder is considered valid even today as one of the strongest in the Danish club history. Except for the season 1989, in which one had to be beaten just three points behind the surprise team Odense BK, one was the measure of all things in Denmark and each won the championship.

In the UEFA Cup of the season 1990/91 we saw again at the European level for sensation. After victories against the favored Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Torpedo Moscow, they even drew one to the semi-finals of the competition, in which one, however, the Roma were beaten with a total score of 1:2 up. Due to the success of the stars of the team, however, were interesting for clubs from all over Europe, so it came to the playing time in 1991 to the collapse of the team, of which Brøndby could not recover for years.

Had the departure of Brian Laudrup to Bayer Uerdingen still able to compensate well the new young star Ronnie Ekelund, you no longer managed this in the case of disposals of Schmeichel, Christensen, Jensen and Frank Pingel. Of the arrivierten players only Vilfort the association remained faithful. Although the fetched as a substitute of Aalborg BK talents Jes Høgh and Marc Rieper and rising Søren Colding of Frem Copenhagen had great potential, but for now this could not retrieve. As a consequence, took the team in the season 1991/92 only to fourth overall place.

When they also lost with Ekelund for season 1992/93 the most promising young professional to FC Barcelona, it was expected that the complete collapse of the team. This was the young team also due to a superior Vilfort, who with ten goals this season was able to record his best goal tally in dress from Brøndby, turn away. They even improved on table three overall place.

With the commitment of Dan Eggen for the 1993/94 season was affected to a significant increase in quality of the team. It was back on the season in the fight for the championship and was winning the Danish Cup after four years finally win a title.

In the season 1994/95 they were again favorites for the title and had until the last lap realistic chance at the championship. In a dramatic season finale, however, you had to local rivals FC Copenhagen defeated 0-1, whereupon Aalborg BK, which won in the simultaneous game against Aarhus GF 4-0, but could still celebrate with a two point lead the championship. In the European Cup winners would retire in the second main round with a total score of 2:3 extremely unhappy against Arsenal from.

In the 1995/96 season the team was after five years finally win the championship in Denmark and have scored in the UEFA Cup for attention. After you could turn off in the first two rounds FK Inkaras Kaunas with a total score of 6-0 and the Norwegians Lillestrøm SK 3-0, it came then to a duel with the English top club Liverpool FC. In the home game they managed against the overpowering opponents from England already a highly regarded 0-0, before you climb in the venerable Anfield in Liverpool with a 1-0 win in the next round. In the third main round of the competition you got drawn against AS Roma, you could also defeat 2-1 in the home game. After a tough battle in the second leg, which was lost 3-1, then indeed would retire from the competition from the rise against Liverpool but until now regarded as one of the highlights in the club's history.

In the season 1996/97 is prolonged supremacy in Denmark and 14 points ahead again superior masters. After the collapse of the success team at the beginning of the decade, they had done it again around the player skeleton harrows it - Jensen - Nielsen - Vilfort - Sandy put together a well-functioning team that dominated the league. At European level, you could put some accents again. Although it failed to qualify for the Champions League after a total score of 4:4 on the away goals rule to Widzew Łódź, pulled thereupon in the UEFA Cup after victories against FC Aarau and FC Aberdeen and two outstanding games against the favored Karlsruher SC to the quarterfinals of the a competition. There they defeated the trained Jupp Heynckes' CD Tenerife to 1-0 home victory yet with a total score of 2-0.
