Kimilsungia

The Kimilsungia is a hybrid of two Dendrobium hybrids and as well as the Kimjongilia and the magnolia a North Korean national flower.

In the official German publications of North Korea it is called Kimilsungie.

History and Culture

The Kimilsungia was bred in 1964 by an Indonesian gardener in Makassar from a Dendrobium Ale Ale Kai and a Dendrobium Pompadour and registered with the name Dendrobium Clara Bundt. Dedicated in 1965, then-President Sukarno of Indonesia, the plant of the North Korean President Kim Il-sung on the occasion of a state visit.

Every year in April in Pyongyang Kimilsungia Flower Show held on the next to the Kimilsungia also the occasion of the 46th birthday of Kim Jong- il grown Kimjongilia is presented.

In one scene, the Arirang mass dances are emulated by the actresses Kimilsungias. The pistils are each represented by soldiers.
