Kirovsk, Murmansk Oblast

Kirovsk (Russian Кировск ) is a town in Murmansk Oblast in Russia with 28,625 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). The mining town is located about 175 km south of Murmansk on the southern edge of the lake Chibinen Bolshoi Wudjawr.

History

The place was built in 1929 under the name Khibinogorsk ( Хибиногорск ) founded by apatite and Nephelinvorkommen dismantle that had been discovered by an expedition under Alexander Fersman. 1931 was the municipal rights and was renamed in 1934 in honor of Sergei Kirov functionary, who had planned to build the mining industry in Kirovsk and was murdered that year.

In Kirovsk is one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world. The touristic importance of the region as a ski resort and as a starting point for hikes increases.
