Kirsten Gillibrand

Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik Gillibrand [ kɝ ː STN dʒɪləbɹænd ] ( born December 9, 1966 in Albany, New York) is an American politician. She is a member of the Democratic Party since 27 January 2009 as a representative of the State of New York Member of the Senate of the United States. Previously it belonged since 4 January 2007 as the representative of the 20th New York Congressional District House of Representatives on.

Career

After the Bachelor 's degree in Chinese Studies from Dartmouth College and studying law at the University of California, Los Angeles, she graduated in 1991 as a Juris Doctor, she worked as a Law Clerk at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. During the presidency of Bill Clinton, she was advisor to the Minister of Construction Andrew Cuomo. Afterwards she worked as an attorney in the law offices of Davis Polk & Wardwell and Boies, Schiller & Flexner. Among her clients was one of Philip Morris USA.

In the elections, the 110th Congress of the United States in 2006, she went to the 20th Congressional District of the State of New York against the three times re-elected incumbent John E. Sweeney and won the seat in the House of Representatives. In November 2008, she stood for re-election for the 111th Congress, beating her Republican challenger Alexander Treadwell. On 23 January 2009, the New York Governor David Paterson appointed her to the place of Hillary Clinton, who had resigned after being appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the U.S. Senate. Gillibrand put her oath as a senator on January 27, 2009. Although the term of office of Hillary Clinton would have ended without her resignation in January, 2013, Gillibrand was initially appointed only up to a meeting held on November 2, 2010 election as Senator Clinton and successor. The by-election, she won then clear. Gillibrand appeared on November 6, 2012 for re-election for her Senate seat and was able to beat her Republican challenger Wendy Long very clearly with a vote share of 72 percent.

Gillibrand has two children with her husband Jonathan and lives in Greenport. She was temporarily the youngest member of the Senate.
