Kollóttadyngja is a shield volcano of 1177 m in the north-east of Iceland.

Name

The name means to German bald shield volcano.

Location

The volcano is located in a lava field in Ódáðahraun uninhabited highlands of Iceland to the north of the great Vatnajökull glacier shield and not far from Askja to the volcanic system it belongs and Herðubreið.

Description

The volcano has a considerable diameter of 6-7 km, which is typical of shield volcanoes. On the summit is a small caldera with a diameter of 800 m at 20-39 m depth and a central crater of 150 m in diameter at a depth of 60-70 m.

The shield volcano is part of the column system of Askja.
