Kotovsk, Russia

Kotowsk (Russian Котовск ) is a town in Tambov Oblast (Russia) with 31,850 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the central part of the Oka -Don plain about 15 km south of Oblasthauptstadt Tambov on the right bank of the Zna, a left tributary of Moksha in the river system of the Volga.

Kotowsk the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly.

History

The village was founded in connection with the establishment of a state the explosives factory 1914-1916. Initially he was as a settlement Porochowoi Zavod (Russian literally for powder plant) district of Tambov.

On March 18, 1919, the name was changed in boevik Krasny ( Red fighters ).

On April 16, 1940, the place became independent and became a town under the present name, after Grigori Kotowski ( 1881-1925 ), a commander of the Red Army, which was in 1921 involved in the suppression of the peasant uprising of Tambov.

Culture and sights

Near the town, on the banks of Zna between Kotowsk and Tambov, remains of Treguljajew - John - the - Baptist Monastery are ( Трегуляев - Предтеченский монастырь / Treguljajew - Predtetschenski monastyr ) from the second half of the 17th to 18th centuries.

Economy and infrastructure

Kotowsk is an industrial satellite city of Tambov works for plastics, paints and coatings, synthetic leather as well as companies in the building materials industry and the food industry. The largest employers are the government powder factory Tambowski Porochowoi Sawod and the factory ALMA.

The city is an endpoint opened in 1932, 17 -kilometer-long railway line which branches off in Tambov ( Tambov station -I) of the Moscow- Saratov. On the northern edge of Kotowsk also is the station Tambov -II. The station Tambov - II has been shut down as a passenger station for several years and now serves only freight.
