Krems in Kärnten is a municipality with 1851 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Spittal an der Drau.

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the north area of Carinthia on the border with Salzburg and Styria. The municipality, with an area of 207 square kilometers, the fourth largest in Carinthia, covers the Katschberg and Liesertal and ranges with the Krems and the Leobental deep into the Nockgebiet. A portion of the township is located in the Nock Mountains National Park.

Main places in the municipality are Eisentratten, Inner Krems Krems and bridge.

History

1197 the archiepiscopal castle - Salzburgische Rauchenkatsch was called, which was located just north of Kremsbrücke and was destroyed in 1201 by an earthquake.

The oldest church on the territory of the municipality, "St. Nicholas " in St. Nicholas, was first mentioned in 1351.

In Innerkrems ore was mined from the 14th century. The oldest document about here is from the year 1399; in awarded her Archbishop of Salzburg Paul Gregory V of Hamersbach his " hammer and Plahütten ". By 1400 there were in Eisentratten an iron hammer mill. In Kremsbrücke the first Austrian raft furnace was built in 1541, on August 13, 1566 the first blast furnace in Eisentratten was built by Jacob Türgg and put into operation. After Türgg whose residence named " Türggenhaus ", which has been preserved until today.

After the Kremser blast furnace had been abandoned in 1834, the Count Lodron 1861 was built a new, 10.64 m high furnace in Eisentratten, the 1883 was to the setting of the iron ore mining in Inner Krems in operation; the decommissioned blast furnace has been preserved and is now the symbol of the community.

1872 an independent local church Kremsbrücke was separated from the municipality of Gmünd. From this, in turn, Eisentratten became independent in 1902 as a separate municipality. The latter was enlarged in 1958 by parts of the disbanded community Puchreit. In the municipality of structural reform in 1973 Kremsbrücke and most of the community Eisentratten were united to the new community Krems in Carinthia. The " Krems " is a side valley of the Lieser, here was begun in the late Middle Ages, with the mining and smelting of iron ore.

Despite its location on the major traffic route has always been on the Katschberg were and the villages of today's large church are heavily agricultural. In recent decades, tourism plays an increasingly important role in the community, mainly due to the Nockalmstraße and the Nock Mountains National Park as well as the ski Innerkrems.

Population

According to the 2001 census, Krems has 2,157 inhabitants in Carinthia, of which 96.7% have the German citizenship Austrian and 1.5%. The population has been declining since the 1950s.

68.2 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 28.5 % for the Protestant Church, 1.8% is no religious persuasion.

The local council of Krems has 19 members and is composed as follows since the municipal elections in 2009 together:

Coat of arms

As a motive for the coat of arms the newly formed municipality chose the dominant industrial monument, the Constantine blast furnace in Eisentratten. Coat of arms and flag were presented on November 30, 1983, the flag is green and white with integrated crest.

Partner community

The German community Poppenricht in Bavaria is a partner congregation of Krems.
