Kritsa

Kritsa (Greek Κριτσά ( f sg ) ) is a town in the east of Crete, in the municipality of Agios Nikolaos of the municipality of the same name. The distance to the city of Agios Nikolaos is about nine kilometers. In 2011, the Statistics counted 1,296 inhabitants in Kritsa itself and 2,637 inhabitants with the connected places.

Kritsa served in 1956 as the setting for the filming of the movie The man who has to die on the novel by Nikos Kazantzákis. Kritsa is known by its proximity to the church of Panagia i Kerá, which is just before the village. The residents earn their livelihood in addition to agriculture mainly through the sale of handmade goods that are offered in the main street of the village in front of almost every house.

  • The cemetery church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (John the Baptist ) from 1370.
  • Agios Georgios - (St. George) with remaining frescoes dating from the thirteenth century. It is located on the left side of the road on the route of Kritsa after Kroustas.

In addition Kritsa is considered the starting point for trips into the mountains to the Dikte Katharo level in altitude of 1,100 meters and the Lasithi Plateau.
