Geography

Kühndorf is located southwest of the Thuringian Forest near the Werra valley between Meiningen and Zella- Mehlis. Northwest of the town is the 739.5 -meter-high Dolmar.

History

With its first mention in the year 795 Kühndorf is the oldest settlement in the historically significant Henneberger circle Schleusingen - Suhl. Kühndorf made ​​from time to time the county seat of the Lords to Kühndorf before succession to the county of Henneberg, Saxe and finally belonged to Prussia. Until 1815 was Kühndorf seat of the Saxon Office Kühndorf, which included the towns of Christe, Dietzhausen, Dillstädt, Mäbendorf, pipe and Wichtshausen. From 1816 to 1944 the town belonged to the governmental district of the Prussian province of Saxony Erfurt, before it subsequently came to the state of Thuringia. From 1949 to 1990, it belonged to the GDR and was from 1952 in the district of Suhl.

Kühndorf was 1603-1660 of witch hunts affected: Ten people came in witch trials, at least three women were executed, two women punished with expulsion from the country, four processes the output is unknown. The first victim in 1603 was Margaretha Jacob.
