La Fille du Régiment ( German: The Daughter of the Regiment ) is a comic opera in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The work was written during his stay in Paris 1838-1843 in French. It was premiered on February 11, 1840 at the Opéra -Comique and had sustained success on the stage. Long time it belonged to the standard repertoire of opera houses.

Action

A direct literary presentation of the opera is not known. However, schemas are processed, which were widespread at the beginning of the 19th century, the Transfiguration peasant- soldier's honesty and the presentation of the aristocratic world as false and verkünstelt.

The opera tells the story of a young love that fails first and then victorious. The simple act in itself is hard to take seriously. But it offers the composer what he needed for a successful opera, namely ample opportunity to peppy - rhythmic music, sometimes military, sometimes dance-like swinging, sometimes romantic.

The plant thrives on the contrast between the "wrong" world of the aristocracy and the "honest " and " indigenous " military world. This is particularly evident in the musical " singing lessons scene " at the beginning of the second act.

Act I

Marie, a foundling, was brought together by the soldiers of the 21st Regiment, French and lives as a sutler with the army.

During a battle in Tyrol, the Marquess of Berke Field asks the captain of the regiment, Sulpice to escort to her estate. The soldiers of the regiment have been arrested at the same time a young Tyrolean peasant named Tonio, and it turns out that it is Marie's lover. Since Marie may only marry a soldier, Tonio enters the army. However, it turns out that the Marquise Marie 's guardian. That's why Marie has to leave the regiment and Tonio to obtain a noble upbringing.

Second Act

Some time has passed and the Marquise has threaded a wedding with the son of the Countess of Krackentorp for Marie. In a singing lesson Marie will sing a virtuoso bel canto aria, but it expires again on the anthem of her 21st Regiment.

Tonio and the regiment appear on the lock to prevent the wedding. It turns out that Marie is the illegitimate child of the Marquise. Also, since it comes out that Marie is in no way grew up in a castle, but has a past as a Daughter of the Regiment, bursting the marriage with the Baron of Krackentorp and the way is clear for the two young lovers. The opera ends with a paean to the French nation.

Interpretation of history

Today, the plant is no longer part of the standard repertoire, because the two main characters Marie and Tonio are considered extremely difficult. However, the role of the sassy and quick-witted daughter of the regiment has repeatedly attracted the interest of important singers in coming. Significant interpreters of Marie were Jenny Lind, Marc Sembrich, Luisa Tetrazzini, Lily Pons, Joan Sutherland and more recently Natalie Dessay and Diana Damrau.

The first aria of Tonio applies because of the extremely high altitude ( nine high Cs) as a limit game for lyric tenors. Major artists of Tonio were Luciano Pavarotti, Rockwell Blake and Juan Diego Flórez.
