Laagna

Laagna is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Vaivara ( Vaivara vald ). It is located in Ida -Viru county (East Wierland ) in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

The village has 42 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2012). It lies on the highway between the Estonian capital Tallinn and St. Petersburg, Russia.

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1412 under the name Langhenal.

Good Laagna

Since 1498 the manor of Laagna was conducted under the name Kuydenurm. 1661 was designated as Lagena. 1631 Field Marshal Hermann von Wrangel ( 1587-1643 ) was a fief for his services to the estate. 1657 burned the mansion from during the Russo- Swedish War. Three years later, it was Johann Bernhard build again from Wrangell. Later it fell to the Swedish crown.

After the conquest of the Baltic states by Russia was Catherine I. the good of Wrangel family back. In June and July 1764, Empress Catherine II stayed twice at the estate.

Laagna later came into the ownership of the noble German Baltic families Maydell, Sievers ( 1760 ) and Herman Berg ( 1791 ).

1919, the estate was expropriated in the course of the Estonian land reform. The state gave it to August Raudsoo who had rendered outstanding services in the Estonian War of Independence.

The historic buildings of the estate have been preserved only as ruins.

Estonian War of Independence

On January 18, 1919, came during the Estonian War of Independence in Laagna to a battle between troops and Estonian Finnish volunteers on the one hand and Soviet organizations on the other.
