Lafonia

Geographical location

Lafonia refers to the southern part of the island of East Falkland, which is one of the South Atlantic Falkland Islands.

The 2400 km ² large peninsula Lafonia is connected by a narrow isthmus, which is less than a mile wide at its narrowest point, with the northern part of East Falkland. The isthmus separates the Choiseul Sound (inner-most part of Darwin Harbour ) in the east of Brenton Loch (inner-most part of Camilla Creek ) to the west. Barren Iceland, Iceland Bleaker, George Iceland, Iceland Lively, Sealion Iceland and Speedwell Iceland are Lafonia and belong geographically to the region.

The name goes back to the British sheep farmer Samuel Fisher Lafone, who bought the site in 1846 to keep sheep there.

Lafonia is very sparsely. The two largest settlements, Goose Green ( with 70 inhabitants the second largest city of the Falkland Islands) and Darwin are on the isthmus. Other settlements are North Arm Settlement ( 25 inhabitants) and Walker Creek. Abandoned settlements are Hope Place, Kelp Creek and Egg Harbor. However, the Peninsula has a rich wildlife. In addition to various species of ducks as Chilepfeifente or Versicolorente there are also sea lions, dolphins and penguins.

In the field Lafonias is the southernmost suspension bridge in the world. It was built in 1825 and used for the sheep drive to Shur.
