Lake Büyükçekmece

The Büyükçekmece Gölü ( Büyükçekmece Lake ) is located in Istanbul, in the eponymous district Büyükçekmece. The lake is used as the main source of drinking water of Istanbul. The lake was deepened by the state water authorities due to major construction work. At the interface of the lake and the Marmara Sea, a dam was installed, the Büyükçekmece reservoir. The lake is separated by a bay of Marmara Sea, this cove is a historical bridge that Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Bridge. Between the reservoir and the sea, the water is slightly salty. In the water used to live 30 species of fish, meanwhile, are only 15 species of fish left.

The total length is 7 km, and the width 2 km. It reaches its maximum depth of 8.6 m.

Villages on the lake are directly Büyükçekmece and Çatalca.
