Lake Wilkie

Moorsee

Lake Wilkie is a small lake near the Tautuku Bay in The Catlins countryside south of Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand and a station on the Southern Scenic Route. It was formed after the last ice age behind sand dunes and gradually shrank to its current size of 1.7 acres. Bog lakes such as Lake Wilkie are unusual in this part of New Zealand, a further special feature is the population of an introduced species of tiny frogs.

The lake is not far from the road. Several signs explain the progression of siltation and thereby successive plants. The transition from sphagnum moss to full-grown forest takes place here within just 65 meters.
