Lamprey River

The Lamprey River is a river in the southeast of the U.S. state of New Hampshire.

The Lamprey River rises in the Town of Northwood. He initially flows in an arc to the north, then west and finally south. He flows through the Northwood Meadows State Park. He keeps his course in the south. It flows through the small reservoir freeses Pond and finally reached the place Raymond. Then the river turns east and passes Epping and Newmarket. Finally, it flows into the Great Bay, an estuary, which is connected via the Piscataqua River to the Atlantic Ocean. The Lamprey River has a length of 80 km. It drains an area of 545 km ².

A nearly 38 km long stretch of the river from the Bunker Pond Dam in Epping to the confluence of the River Piscassic in Newmarket is excellent as a National Wild and Scenic River.

Naming

The name of the river ( lamprey engl. For lamprey ) is derived ( appendix Lethenteron ) from the American lamprey from, which is native to the river.

Fauna

The river is the habitat of several species of migratory fish such as herring species of the genus Alosa and smelt and Atlantic salmon. These can freely swim upriver to spawn up to the situated south-west of Durham Wiswall Dam. The Lamprey River is home to several freshwater mussel species.
