Laurentius Surius

Lawrence Surius (* 1522 in Lübeck, † May 23 1578 in Cologne ) was a German Carthusian monk, Catholic hagiographer and writer.

Life

Surius studied in Frankfurt (Oder) and subsequently in Cologne. There he made the acquaintance of Peter Canisius, who was able to convince him to devote his life to science and teaching. John Justus von Landsberg moved Surius for entering the monastery and with effect from February 23, 1541 began his novitiate in this Carthusian monastery in Cologne. Already in the following year (23 February 1542) took his vows in 1543 and he received his ordination.

Except for a brief interruption only Surius remained until his death in his Cologne convent and worked as a writer. Pope Pius V, the Surius the first volume of his work was devoted to " The Lives of the Saints ," asked the Prior of the Carthusian Monastery, one may grant the learned man relaxing the rules of the order.

With over 55 years Lawrence Surius died on 23 May in Cologne and found his final resting place.

Reception

With its Commentarius Surius 1566 corresponds with Johannes Carion and John Sleidanus. This work was published in Latin in 1858 and became Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Fabricius translated into German. 1571 was carried out by Jacques Estourneau a translation into French. Michael van Isselt gave this plant in 1586 ( and again in 1601 ) this works out together with a comment.
