Lazarus taxon

Under the Lazarus effect is defined as the retrieval of animal species that were considered extinct. The term is borrowed by Jesus of the biblical story of the resurrection of Lazarus.

The term is used for the first time in an article about the mass extinction at the Cretaceous - Tertiary boundary. Some taxa appear not directly after the event, but a few million years later in the fossil record back on. Reasons can be both gaps in the stratigraphic tradition as well as actual recovery after a near- extinction. Due to this effect, it is difficult to moor the actual reasons for the triggering extinction event and mass extinctions differ from "normal" extinction events. It was only later the term was also applied to living ( extant ) species that were rediscovered after they were considered extinct long, transmitted, although it is here then actually not an " effect".
