Le Crès

Le Crès ( Occitan Lo CREC ) is a commune in the department of Hérault in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. Its inhabitants are called " Cressois ".

Geography

The community is located approximately six kilometers east of Montpellier, halfway between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Cevennes. The environment consists of open, Mediterranean scrubland formations. The area is crossed by a river called Salaison, who gave his name to the northern part of the city, there is also a five -acre lake.

Transport links

The southern part of the town area is crossed by the road department 613, the northern part of the department of Road 65. The place is connected to Montpellier since 2006 by a tram ( line 2). History

The first traces of human life in the local area date back to the Neolithic period ( 3800 BC).

From anger over the loss of 80 horses, the castle of Le Crès by Admiral Gaspard de Coligny ( 1519-1572 ) was destroyed during the religious wars, and only a small street still remembers it.

During the Ancien Régime Le Crès formed a parish with Castelnau -le- Lez first as Castelnau- lès -Montpellier, then under Castelnau -Le Crès.

In the early nineteenth century, increasingly separated from Castelnau by garrigue, the village grew and soon had its own priest ( 1830), followed by, among others, a local school and a cemetery.
