Le Crest

Le Crest is a commune with 1308 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It is located about 15 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand.

Population

The population has been increasing since the 60s back to stable. Le Crest converts to intensify their place of residence for commuters to the nearby city of Clermont- Ferrand, but also maintains the rural character of a former wine-growing village.

Geography

The circular, medieval village of Le Crest is highly visible on a hill at the eastern end of the plateau de la Serre. Just south of the village center, the new residential area spread on the slopes of the plateau north of it the terrain falls to the river Auzon.

In the Plateau de la Serre is a 3.5 million years old lava flow, which protrudes through the process of reverse relief today some hundred meters from the landscape.

History

The medieval foundation has long been in the possession of the Dukes of Auvergne. Along with the castles of Opme and La batisse in Chanonat allowed the castle of Le Crest controlling the valleys of Auzon, the Monne and the Allier. An added today, inundated underground passage from the 15th century combined with Le Crest La batisse.

Attractions

  • The town's landmark is a highly recognizable clock tower, the only remains of a medieval castle. From here you have a panoramic view of the volcanoes of the Auvergne to the Forez extends.
  • Hiking trails lead to the Plateau de la Serre with an observatory of the French Bird Protection League LPO for observation of migratory birds.
