Le Pelerinage de Lourdes

In the Encyclical Le Pèlerinage de Lourdes (French: The pilgrimage of Lourdes ) from July 2, 1957 takes Pope Pius XII. the " 100th Anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes to warn " as a reason " in front of the materialism. " In his newsletter, he turned to the French episcopate and recalls his personal pilgrimage to Lourdes.

About the Publication

The extensive first part describes Pius XII. the history of the pilgrimage site of Lourdes and the first appearance of the Mother of God. He explains the significance of these events, praises the religious life of " Bernadette of Lourdes " and refers to the worship and promotion of the site. His predecessor and he himself were glowing admirer of the Virgin Mary, he writes, this has been shown also to the pilgrimages of some popes.

About the materialism

The second part uses Pius XII. to warn of the increasing materialism, and complained that this devastating loss causes. It continues to write, materialism find its expression in the excessive desire for convenience and turning away from religious life. Furthermore, this way of life to encourage unrestrained search for pleasure and entertainment.

In the final part of the Pope calls on all clergy and Catholics on a pilgrimage to Lourdes to pray for themselves the counsel and the Mother of God for help.
