Lee Hoiby

Lee Henry Hoiby ( born February 17, 1926 in Madison, Wisconsin, † March 28, 2011 in New York City ) was an American composer and concert pianist. His focus was on operas and songs. He was a pupil of the composer Gian Carlo Menotti. Unlike many of his contemporaries Lee Hoiby remained faithful to the tonal composing during his creative period. His most famous work is his implementation of Tennessee Williams 's Summer and Smoke (Summer and Smoke ), which had its premiere at the Opera House in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1971.

Life

Lee Hoiby was born in 1926 in Madison in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Recognized early as a child prodigy, he started at the age of five years to play the piano. He studied at the University of Wisconsin -Madison piano with the pianist Gunnar Johansen and Egon Petri, followed by Hoiby student of Darius Milhaud at Mills College. In Gian Carlo Menotti at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, he studied composition. Lee Hoiby was influenced by many composers, mainly of the avant -garde of the 20th century such as Rudolf Kolisch, the brother of Arnold Schoenberg, and Harry Partch, whose Dadaists ensemble he starred in his early years. Although he tended initially to a career as a concert pianist, he later dealt mainly with the Komponisition.

Lee Hoiby died on 28 March 2011 after a short illness at the consequences of a melanoma.
