Lefortovo District

The district Lefortovsky ( listen russian Лефортово? / I ) is located east of the center of Moscow and was named after the Swiss Admiral François Le Fort, who was a close associate of Peter the Great. The unit, which was under the command of Le Fort was stationed on the left bank of the river Jausa.

Originally designated the name only the location of the unit, then the entire area between the Nemezkaja sloboda came ( German settlement ) was added to the west and Annengofskaja Roscha. Over time a Tsar Palace was built in the neighborhood where you can see a tank academy. To date, Lefortovsky has retained its importance as the most important location of several military units and academies.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the adjoining land with factories and manufacturing plants were built.

Lefortovsky was one of the centers of resistance to the Bolshevik seizure of power in Moscow in the autumn of 1917. Under the command of Colonel Erwin Rahr the barracks of the First Moscow Cadet Corps contributed days fierce resistance against the Bolsheviks.

The main companies were and are still the Serp i Molot steel producer ( German " sickle and hammer " ) and spirits crystal factory. For reasons of environmental protection, the steel producer is to be relocated to the suburbs and the area for new housing estates, office buildings and shopping are created. The spirits factory was renovated and currently houses also the Vodka Museum, which is one of the attractions of the district.

In the field of Lefortovsky district is located to the Wwedenskoje Cemetery of the most important German cemetery on the territory of Moscow.

Even the infamous Lefortovo political prison got its name after the quarter.
