History

Lelystad was founded in 1967. It was named after Cornelis Lely, the initiator of the Zuiderzee. Originally planned name was Flevostad.

Like the rest of Flevoland (except the former islands of Urk and Schokland ) Lelystad was on a polder, ie the sea abgewonnenem country built. The area was dry until 1957. Today Lelystad is just five meters below sea level.

The oldest part of the town is Lelystad - Haven, which covered the area of the island with the pioneer settlement worker, was built from which the dam and therefore exist since the construction of the polder.

Originally Lelystad was planned as a regional center for the entire southern polders. But its isolated location made it difficult this feature from the beginning. Originally namely are composed of Markerwaard, Südflevoland, Ostflevoland and Noordoostpolder in the center of the area of the city. As the southern part of the polder Flevoland Almere dry fell and emerged as Entlastungsort for Randstad, Almere benefited from its proximity to the Randstad, so that in contrast to Almere Lelystad relatively quickly grew.

As yet the Markerwaard was not built then and thus the connection from the west of the region was never trade marks remained the isolated location of Lelystad permanent. Thus, the city is indeed still the main center and the administrative seat of the province of Flevoland, terms of population, but it is far inferior to Almere.
