Lemuel Amerman

Lemuel Amerman ( born October 29, 1846 in Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania, † October 7, 1897 in Blossburg, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Lemuel Amerman attended the common schools and the Danville Academy. Then he studied until 1869 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg. In the following three years he taught as a teacher. After studying law and his 1873 was admitted as a lawyer, he started working in Philadelphia in this profession. In 1876 he moved his residence and his law firm to Scranton. He was also active in the banking industry. In 1879 and 1880 he worked as a lawyer for the Lackawanna County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1881 and 1884 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Thereafter, he served in 1885 and 1886 as Comptroller of the City Scranton. Subsequently, he was until 1887 the secretary of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1890 Amerman was in the eleventh electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Republican Joseph A. Scranton took on March 4, 1891, he had beaten in the election. Since he lost in 1892 to Scranton, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1893.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Lemuel Amerman again practiced as a lawyer. He died on October 7, 1897 in Blossburg, and was buried in Scranton.
