Joseph A. Scranton

Joseph Augustine Scranton ( born July 26, 1838 in Madison, Connecticut, † October 12, 1908 in Scranton, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1897 he represented several times the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joseph Scranton was a second cousin of Congressman George W. Scranton ( 1811-1861 ). In 1847 he came with his parents to Pennsylvania. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover and graduated from 1857-1861 Yale College. Between 1862 and 1866 he worked for the tax authority. He also went into the newspaper business. In 1867 he founded the newspaper Scranton Daily Republican. From 1874 to 1881 he also served as postmaster in Scranton. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In June 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in part, was nominated to the President Ulysses S. Grant for re-election.

In the congressional elections of 1880 Scranton was in the twelfth electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats Hendrick Bradley Wright on March 4, 1881. Since he missed the re-election in 1882, he was initially able to do only one term in Congress until March 3, 1883. In 1884 he was elected again in the twelfth district of his state in Congress, where he replaced Daniel W. Connolly on March 4, 1885 which was two years before become his successor. In 1886, he was not confirmed in this mandate. Therefore, he could again spend only one term in the U.S. House of Representatives until March 3, 1887.

A year later he was elected to Parliament in Washington again in the eleventh district of Pennsylvania, where he could implement his mandate in the footsteps of Charles R. Buckalew between 4 March 1889, March 3, 1891. During this time he was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1890 he was not re-elected again. In the elections of 1892 Scranton managed in the eleventh district to re- re-entry into the Congress. After a re-election he was able to complete two legislative periods between 4 March 1893 to 3 March 1897. Since 1895, he headed the committee dealing with the management of the American territories. In 1896 he gave up another Congress candidate.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Joseph Scranton again worked in the newspaper industry. From 1901 to 1903 he was also eunuchs in Lackawanna County. He died on October 12, 1908 in Scranton. His grandson William Scranton (1917-2013) was Governor of Pennsylvania and U.S. Ambassador to the UN; his great-grandson William born 1947 Worthington Scranton was Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania.
