Leon Kamin

Leon J. fireplace ( born December 29, 1927 in Taunton, Massachusetts) is an American psychologist.

Biography

Fireplace grew up in Taunton, Massachusetts on as one of 14 children of a Polish- Jewish rabbinical family. As Jews in a city with a predominantly Christian population, the family had to face hostility. Fireplace responded by retiring from social contacts outside the family and focused more on school.

As he told himself later, he realized thereto the importance of social environment for the development of young people. Early on, he took to study the intent, as well as becoming a professor. This plan was supported by his family. At age 16, he resumed his studies at Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts ); he received the BA in 1949 and 1954 the Ph. D. degree from the University. During his studies, he joined the Communist Party USA.

Leon J. fireplace is cousin of the composer and author Franz fireplace and uncle of musician Aaron fireplace. He is married and has seven children. With the British professor of biology and neurobiology Steven P. Rose he is a close friend and works partly also with him.

Scientific Work

Fireplace is of the opinion that a heritability of intelligence quotient ( IQ) is not likely. He wrote in 1974 that no there are no data from which a reasonable person could conclude that the IQ is hereditary to any proportion.

He was one of the first critics of the British psychologist Sir Cyril Burt and considers that its works are fake ( " Burt Affair ").

Fireplace is the author of several books. His most famous work entitled " Not in Our Genes" (German title: " The genes are not ... " ), he co-wrote with Steven P. Rose and Richard Lewontin. In this book argues fireplace that IQ and character are not innate, but would learn through the environment.
