Leonardus Achates

Leonardus Achates, actually Leonhard Agtstein, was a Swiss typographer who worked about 1472 to 1491 in Italy. He was born in Basel and is therefore also known as Leonardus de Basilea.

Leonardus Achates was a pioneer of printing in Italy. In 1472 he printed the works of the Roman poet Virgil in Venice, his name appears in the same year in Vicenza. He was a long time active, but there are also prints from Padua ( 1473 ) and St. Urso ( 1474 ). Not all of his prints can be attributed to him unequivocally. His latest known print is dated 23 December 1491st
