Leonhard Hutter

Leonhard Hutter (also: Hütter, often Latinized to Hutterus; * January 1563 in Nellingen near Ulm, † October 23, 1616 in Wittenberg ) was a Lutheran theologian.

Life

Born the son of a former pastor to Nelligen Leonhard Hutter, who was later in Ulm, and his wife Anna Politely, he began his studies in 1581 at the University of Strasbourg, where he studied for ten years. He continued his studies at the University of Leipzig, at the University of Heidelberg and at the University of Jena. In 1583 he obtained the degree of Master of Arts in Strasbourg, under the Office of the Dean of Johannes Pappus and his PhD in 1594 in Leipzig as a doctor of theology.

There he gave private lectures and was appointed in 1596 as professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg. He was three times rector of the Academy. In 1599 he had married Barbara Manlich, from the 16- year marriage no children have emerged. He died of a stroke at the age of 53 years and was buried on October 25.

His main work, the Compendium locorum theologicorum (about: manual basic theological terms ) was leading the way for generations of pupils and students of theology. It described the confessional Lutheran doctrine of Konkordienbuches in a systematic, catechism -like fashion. In 1609 it was by royal decree to the standard textbook for the three Saxon prince schools in Naumburg, Meissen and Grimsby.

In the 19th century it was so well known that Karl von Hase title Hutterus redivivus (which again brought to life Hutter ) gave his textbook of dogmatics.
