Leonhard Päminger

Leonhard Paminger ( born March 29, 1495 Aschach on the Danube; † May 3, 1567 in Passau) was an Austrian composer.

Life

He was born in Aschach on the Danube (Upper Austria ) and baptized. His father Andreas Paminger was there councilor and possibly was in the service of the Counts of Schaumburg.

From Leonhard Pamingers life we know only what little is reported by his sons and a biography of the Oettinger seminary rector Philip Albert Christian rock from 1764.

Thus Paminger was already at the age of 10 years in Vienna, where he - after a burdensome school - could find employment in the choir of St. Stephen. There he was highly valued for its deep bass and his skills on the harp, the lute and the flute. Paminger who spoke fluent Latin and Greek, also knowledge of Tonsatzes taught self-teaching.

Around 1517, at the age of 22, he then came to the Augustinian Canons of St. Nikola in front of Passau, probably as an assistant teacher. He will remain until his death in the service of the monastery. Soon he married Elisabeth Agnes and took up residence in a house with a garden in the Hofmark, which at that time was not one of Passau, but the Bavarian dukes under stood. To his appointment in 1529 is believed to head the school. The archival traces of this school are low. Later visitation reports mention three or four "forward- beds " for the student and Boys' Choir.

The Reformation found resonance in St. Nikola Monastery. Leonhard Paminger also participated until just before his death, with writings in the debate on religious questions time. So he wrote " writings against the Papists, Anabaptists, sacramentarians and opponents of the pure doctrine of the Son of God" and a " Short report of Corruptelen and Jrrthumen, the presence of the true abdomen and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in salvation. Supper belang end ". ( Regensburg 1567)

Martin Luther sent his commentary on Galatians Paminger a personal message: Suo Leonhardo Pamingero, fideli institutori pueritiae Christianae et Musico inter primos laudabili - adopt Leonhard Paminger to boast Conscientious teachers of young Christians and as a musician among the first.

Two compositions dedicated Paminger - all in the humanistic tradition standing - provided with Latin and Greek instructions and riddles, the Wittenberg Greek professor and theologian Philipp Melanchthon.

Whether these contacts are sufficient to the Reformation, to call him a Protestant, must remain open. It is important for the prevailing climate of tolerance that Paminger, despite the turmoil of the Reformation in the convent to convent secretary, the highest lay steward, rise and so is the right hand of the Provost.

Paminger left besides theological treatises and translations of ancient comedies a very extensive compositional work, which his sons Sophonias and Sigismund in 1573 - gave out in 1580. In this, surviving only in a limited number edition of " Cantiones ecclesiasticae " located about 700 church music vocal works Pamingers have received, including the setting of the almost complete Psalter.

1557 died Pamingers woman, in 1562 he married a widow named Barbara that he had already in 1564 to bury. He died on May 3, 1567 at the age of 72 years and was in Passau -St. Nikola buried.
