Les Horaces

Les Horace is a Tragédie lyrique in three acts and two Intermèdes by Antonio Salieri to a text by Nicolas- François Guillard after a drawing by Pierre Corneille.

The premiere took place at the court theater of Versailles on 2 December 1786. The first public performance took place on December 7, 1786 in the Paris Opéra.

The premiere of the opera became a fiasco, the show closed, according to Salieri's first biographer Ignaz Franz von Mosel " not only without applause, but with unequivocal signs of displeasure. " In addition to some mishaps during the performance must above all the subject and the text book for a failure be held responsible. Salieri's composition could not compensate for the shortcomings of the libretto, despite many successful agencies. The work revolves too much about the conflict between love and duty state that people are drawn to one-dimensional.

The high expectations that had been placed after the overwhelming success of Salieri's first French opera Les Danaïdes (1784 ) in the composer saw not met contemporary critics.

Beaumarchais expressed in the works of Salieri opposite ". A really nice work, but a bit too dark for Paris "
