Leucanthemum

The daisies ( Leucanthemum ) are a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). The genus currently comprises 42 species.

The botanical name is derived from Ancient Greek λευκός leukos "white" and an ancient Greek ἄνθος anthos for " flower ", " flower " from.

Description

The types of daisies are short-lived and hardy and herbaceous. The leaf blades are shaped undivided up pinnatisect; the basal leaves and lower stem leaves are stalked and the upper stem leaves sessile. The head wear white tongue and yellow tubular flowers and are rarely to be found without ray florets. The fruits of the type of achenes are ribbed and equipped with mucus cells and secretion channels.

Dissemination

The species of the genus are native to Europe. A kind penetrates even to Siberia (Leucanthemum ircutianum ); it is named after the Siberian city of Irkutsk.

Polyploidy

The genus Leucanthemum represents a Polyploidkomplex, ie, that different species of the genus have different chromosome numbers. The chromosome base number of the daisies genome is 9, a diploid individual thus has 18 chromosomes. In addition to the presumably more primitive, diploid species it came several times to Artbildungsereignissen in which the chromosome set was multiplied. Today one can find species with 36, 54, 72, 90 and 108 chromosomes. The to-find only on a lagoon north of Lisbon Leucanthemum lacustrine even has 198 chromosomes, which corresponds to the 22 sets of chromosomes.
