Leusden

Leusden ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht.

Districts

Achterveld, Leusden, Leusden -Zuid and Stoutenburg, as well Snorrenhoef, part of Moorst and other small settlements.

Original community

The municipality of Leusden existed in its present form since the merger with Stoutenburg in 1969. The original community consisted of two small villages, Leusbroek and Hamersveld. In the sixties and seventies of the 20th century both towns grew very much and were in Leusden -Zuid and Leusden -Centrum, later renamed only Leusden.

Attractions

  • Leusden has the oldest church towers in the Netherlands. They are in Oud- Leusden and are visible from the European Route 30.
  • The concentration camp memorial site of the former Nazi police transit camp " Kamp Amersfoort " (see: Amersfoort ) is located within the territory of the municipality of Leusden

History

Around 1300 BC, people lived here already, as evidenced by the discovery of some urn.

The name " Leusden " is very old. He is first mentioned in a document from the year 777 bishop as Villa Lisiduna. However, this was meant the Oud- Leusden.

The district was home from Stoutenburg 1006, founded by the Utrecht bishop and monastery from the 13th century also used by this lock. However, of the two building complexes is as good as nothing remains.

The district Hamersveld was dependent of about 1600 to 1890 economically on the cultivation of tobacco. After 1970, this part of Leusden has become a suburb of the northern neighboring city of Amersfoort.

The heath Leusderheide became an important military training area with several barracks. Here, several plants were built during the Second World War by the German occupying forces. The Nazis set up in this area in 1941 a transit camp for deportees in the German concentration camp prisoners.
