Lilium maculatum (Japanese Sukashiyuri透 百合, literally transparent lily ) is a species of the genus Lilium (Lilium ) in the Dauricum section. It occurs only in Japan.

Description

Lilium maculatum reaches a height of 30 to 100 centimeters. The bulbs are plump reach a diameter of about 3 cm with white scales. The leaves are glossy green and lanceolate wide. The plant flowers from July to August with three to twelve large standing in a cone, cup- shaped flowers that are dark dots of reddish -orange color and. The seeds germinate instant- epigeal.

Dissemination

Lilium maculatum in Japan is endemic to the island of Honshu. It grows along the Pacific coast on sand, cliffs and open meadows, as well as on the east coast further inland on moist, acidic soils, where it rises to altitudes of up to 1000 meters.

System

Lilium maculatum was first described in 1794 by Carl Peter Thunberg, the specific epithet (dotted maculatum = from Latin ) refers to the dotted petals. A well-known synonym is Lilium wilsonii.

In addition to the nominotypischen taxon exist as varieties:

  • Lilium maculatum var flavum: flourishing in yellow color.
  • Lilium maculatum var bukosanense: Endangered variety from Mount Buko, Saitama, whose genome has been completely sequenced.
