Limbaži District

The Latvian County Limbaži ( Latvian: Limbažu rajons ) was until 2009 an administrative unit in Latvia.

History

On 31 December 1949, the district Limbaži ( Limbažu apriņķis ) was divided into the districts Aloja and Limbaži in the course of municipal reform in the Latvian SSR. 1956, the district Aloja was attached again. From 1962 to 1967, the whole area was part of the district of Valmiera before the district Limbaži ( with Aloja ) again emerged. Due to a law of 1998, the county was dissolved in 2009. The individual municipalities joined to the following districts ( Novads ) together: Aloja, Limbaži, Salacgriva Krimulda (formerly Rigas Rajons ).

Geography

Geographical Location

The county Limbaži extended north-east of Riga on the territory of the former Livonia and was limited by:

  • The district of Riga in the south,
  • The Cesis District in the southeast,
  • The county Valmiera in the east,
  • Estonia in the north and
  • The Gulf of Riga in the west.

Landscape

The territory of the district is covered with:

  • 46% forest cover
  • 35% of agricultural land
  • 13% of wetlands
  • 6% water, parks and the like

Forest land

The great forests of the district has to offer a variety of tree species. The most frequent are:

  • 41% birch
  • 28 % pine (or pine )
  • 20 % spruce and fir

The largest contiguous forest stretches along the highway Via Baltica ( Europe Road 67) between Riga and Estonia.

On the territory of the district there are 34 rivers with a total length of over 10 km. 11 of them serve as spawning grounds for sea trout and lamprey. One of the longest rivers in this case include: Salaca ( German: Salis ) at 95 km, AGE ( German: Adia ), Liepupe, Jugla, Vitrupe 44 km, Brasla 47 km, Svētupe ( German: Svētupe ) 52 km, IgE ( German: Ige ) 32 km.

Lakes

The area of the district is of 63 lakes and reservoirs with a total area of ​​about one hectare covered.

Landscape protection

About 70 % of the territory of the district is part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, a protected area of international importance.
