Lingolsheim

Lingolsheim is a French town with 16,703 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the city of Strasbourg, which is the immediate metropolitan area around Strasbourg.

Geography

Lingolsheim is located 6 km southwest of Strasbourg between the neighboring communities Eckbolsheim the north and Ostwald in the southeast. The rupture flows through the municipal area and the D392 runs through the town.

History

During excavations in the municipality finds of artifacts from the band ceramic culture were ( 5500-5000 BC) made ​​the early Neolithic. The Großgart Acher culture left 42 graves from the Middle Neolithic ( 5.000-4.500/4.300 BC) and Michel Berger culture ( 4400-3500 BC ) left two graves, the latter are particularly interesting because, in a grave, a human skull was found to which they had made ​​trepanation. There are only two such finds in Alsace. From the Late Bronze Age burial urn field culture (1300-800 BC) was found, which includes 21 graves and 60 urns.

A cemetery with eight graves from the Merovingian period (5th - 8th century) is located between Lingolsheim and Geispolsheim. Was first mentioned in a document the city as Lingolsvesheim in the 12th century. Over time, it was called Lingolsvisheim and Lingolslzheim. It was not until 1620, she was named in documents for the first time with the current name. The name originated from the Germanic name Lingolf and the Franconian town ending in " - heim".

In the years before the First World War Lingolsheim was known as the "Capital of the leather ," as there was there with Adler & Oppenheimer one of the largest leather works of that time. After seizure of the company in 1919, the factory in Lingolsheim was sold to French investors. The operation was renamed then as " Tanneries de France ".
