List of Bulgarian monarchs
The First Bulgarian Empire was founded 681 by Khan Asparuch and lasted until the submission to Byzantium 1018.
Since Simeon I, the ruler Tsar called. The second Bulgarian Empire lasted from 1186 to 1396. After the liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878, the third state emerged first as a principality, before Ferdinand I. in 1908 again proclaimed tsar. In 1946 the monarchy was abolished by a referendum.
