Pagan of Bulgaria

Khan Pagan ( Bulgarian Паган ) was the ruler of Bulgaria from 767 to 768

Pagan was, the Byzantine historian Nicephorus, like its predecessors followers of a compensation policy with the Byzantine Empire and a member of the Bulgarian nobility ( Boil ). After he ascended the throne he took immediately to peace negotiations with the Byzantine Emperor Constantine in Thrace. In the negotiations, he criticized his countrymen because of the expulsion of Sabin and the continuing anarchy within the Bulgarian Empire. At the end of the negotiations, the two sides agreed to peace.

But when Pagan was on his way back from Thrace, attacked the Byzantine Emperor, the Bulgarian Empire at surprisingly. His troops marched through the passes of the Balkan Mountains on the Bulgarian capital Pliska and devastated several villages near the city walls. But apparently gave Constantine with this demonstration of power satisfied and withdrew again. Pagan, however, was murdered on the run towards Varna due to its flexible attitude towards Byzantium, by his opponents.
