List of castles in Turkey

The list of castles and fortresses in Turkey leads to a selection of castles and fortresses in Turkey, with the exception of the Istanbul province. The local buildings are included in the list of castles, forts and palaces in Istanbul.

The list of city fortifications, fortified individual buildings, groups of buildings and parts of cities. Listed are also - fortified or unfortified - ruler seats and residences of government officials, princes and governors.

Historical Overview

The present-day Turkey area is inhabited by numerous peoples and kingdoms ruled or been through it, who left fortresses and rulers seats. The oldest known city walls is the citadel in the second layer of Troy from the first half of the third millennium BC, the builders are not known in detail. Sorting in the builder column comes not in alphabetical order by the name, but possible chronologically into eras.
